Do You Know the Signs of Hard Water?
Hard Water Stains
Hard water is caused by dissolved calcium and manganese minerals. The effects on hard water can be both expensive and damaging. So, how do you know if you have it? Signs of hard water you can see are:
- Spots on glassware
- Feeling of residue on skin and hair
- Reduced lather in soaps and detergents
- Low water flow
- Skin feels drier than normal
- Clothes don’t look or smell clean after washing
- Metallic taste or strange odor
- Excessive soap scum and calcium deposits
- Spotting on cars after washing
Effects of hard water that you may not see, is what is happening to your appliances, including your refrigerator and hot water tank. Any appliance using hot water, such as your dishwasher is the most vulnerable appliance because as the hard water is heated, it adheres to surfaces and forms limescale deposits. Scale builds in your pipes or valves and can cause leaks or reduced water flow, increasing the likelihood of expensive repairs. It also can cause your appliances to be inefficient, work harder and reduce the lifespan by half and energy bills to increase.
The solution
Installing a water softener before the water gets to your taps and appliances will remove the calcium and magnesium through a process called ion exchange. Resin beads inside the softener attract the minerals keeping them from flowing through your home.
